Codman island, Maine
When a small site with 180+ degree water views on a much-loved Maine lake became available, our clients wisely snapped it up. Setbacks and height restrictions left a small envelope in which to build, but those limitations became assets for us as the design took shape. Our first goal was to capture the modesty and whimsical spirit of many of the seasonal cottages along this shore, but with a decidedly contemporary take. Even more importantly, we sought to create a backdrop for the pleasures and rituals of summer lake life in New England. Wet dogs, sandy feet, sleepovers and plenty of cozy reading spots on rainy days: this place accommodates all of it. The interior palette is composed of painted wood floors and skip-plane paneling, whitened oak cabinetry, and clean plaster ceilings. We custom-designed many of the foundational furniture pieces to support the slightly eclectic, informal character.
