deer isle, Maine
Located on a Maine island with a rich heritage of 19th century shingle-style houses, our client asked us to design a new house that would carry on this tradition. As a studio, we continue to be fascinated by this unorthodox design problem that seeks—when the context encourages—to produce architecture with almost no contemporary interpretation of a historical vocabulary. Shingle style architecture is particularly appropriate for this task, because its embrace of geometric, abstract forms can feel quite at home in the 21st century. The details highlight the high level of craftsmanship that runs deep in Maine construction, directly related to traditions of wooden boat building. Landscape work is still in process.
